Provincial German Master Cello, c 1850.

Every now and then, a master-made instrument comes down to us, either unlabelled or with an ‘adventurous’ label, claiming the instrument to be by a famous past master; in this case, Enrico Ceruti, Cremona. Some makers, or schools, have distinct characteristics, many do not, and such as in this case, we are unable to get closer than to say that it is likely of provincial German origin, and around 175 years old.

The back plate is of two pieces of striking flamed maple with sides and head in matching wood; the top plate of two pieces of top-quality spruce of even growth over the plate; the varnish is of a lovely light amber-gold; the neck is slim and would be comfortable for a player with a smaller hand.

A fantastic sounding cello which has been played professionally over many years has been set-up by the Franke workshop in Germany and is fitted with Larsen ‘Ill Cannone’ strings. A fine instrument in excellent condition, it would be suitable for the advanced student or professional player.
